MoI Distributes Guidebook to School Children About Safe Internet Use

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, October 22nd 2013 [ME NewsWire]

The Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center, in cooperation with the International Computer Driving License of the Gulf Cooperation Council (ICDL GCC), distributed a guidebook to school students across the UAE. The guidebook includes 101 tips on how to use the Internet and social networking sites in a safe and responsible manner, and aims to spread information awareness among students and their families. It also aims to raise awareness about effective, secure, and responsible use of the Internet, social media sites, and smart devices.

Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Child Protection, stated that the Ministry of Interior demonstrates great interest in children's issues and supports local and international efforts to ensure their protection from abuse.

Furthermore, Major General Al Nuaimi emphasized that Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, strives to maintain the UAE’s position as a beacon of civilization and a role model in the region for its efforts to promote the protection and security of children through preventive and precautionary measures, which thereby strengthens the community’s security and safety.

“Child protection requires boosting cooperation between governmental institutions, entities, NGOs, and the private sector as well as developing strategic partnerships to achieve this end. The publication and distribution of this guidebook is a part of these efforts, and is the result of strategic partnerships that the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center is developing,” indicated Major General Al Nuaimi. Moreover, he stressed the importance of the guidebook and the need for parents and teachers alike to review it. This book shows students the best ways to browse the Internet.

“The guidebook was highly accepted and appreciated among the educational staff after being distributed to thousands of students during the “Summer Camps for ICDL 2013” throughout the UAE. Distributing the guidebook among students in the UAE supports the government and security efforts to educate young people about the potential dangers of the Internet and modern media,” noted Al Nuaimi.

Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Director of the Child Protection Center at the Ministry of Interior and Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Ministry of Interior’s participation at GITEX Technology Week 2013, noted that the guidebook aims to provide parents with the necessary information to help their children use the Internet and social networking sites safely. It also encourages them to communicate with their children about the importance of being vigilant when using the Internet and protecting them from obvious or underlying risks of modern technology.

“Discussion between parents and children about social networks should be an urgent family matter. We recommend to parents to add their children as friends on these sites, which will allow them to monitor their activities and friends list,” explained Lieutenant Colonel Al Shammari.

He noted that child protection is a multilateral responsibility with the first line of defense being at home and school. He also stressed the importance of intensifying joint efforts between the government, private sector, and civil society institutions to adopt effective strategies to enhance public awareness about the nature of cyber-crimes and the best means to combat them.

“Boosting cooperation frameworks with educational authorities will have a positive impact in ensuring the highest levels of security for children within the virtual world. It will also enable them to make optimum use of the Internet and social media channels as an essential pillar of the future,” highlighted Al Shammari.

Furthermore, Jamil Ezzo, Director General of ICDL Foundation, lauded the contribution of the Child Protection Center at the Ministry of Interior and the Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Center for making the guidebook project a success. This guidebook provides an integrated reference enabling children and youth to leverage the positive benefits of the Internet away from the great risk of misuse of websites and social networking sites, which have become popular among various social circles, especially among young people.

He said: “We look forward through the cooperation with security and educational agencies to distribute the guidebook to a broader spectrum of students in the UAE. Moreover, we renew our commitment to work with all stakeholders to raise awareness of about the safe use of the Internet between all members of society.”

The guidebook was prepared by the ICDL GCC Foundation, under the patronage of the Committee for Child Protection at the Ministry of Interior and the Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Center in Abu Dhabi.
