ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, October 28th 2013 [ME NewsWire]
The Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate revoked 68 driving licenses from truck drivers for a period of three months and levied fines reaching AED 10,000 for dangerous overtaking on external roads during September. This measure comes in line with the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters’ priority to maintain safety on roads, in pursuance with the directorate’s strategy to reduce road accidents that occur due to overtaking trucks.
Colonel Hamad Nasser Al Bloushi, Head of Peripheral Regions Traffic Department at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, Abu Dhabi Police, highlighted the risks of traffic accidents that result from dangerous overtaking by trucks. He reiterated the Abu Dhabi Police’s commitment to reduce heavy trucks’ accidents and their resulting deaths and serious injuries, through its safety strategy.
Al Bloushi noted that the directorate has implemented a number of procedures to provide road safety and avoid any potential truck accidents by limiting the maximum speed for trucks to 80 Km/h and prohibiting trucks from using the outer roads in cases of low visibility due to fog or bad weather. “Trucks are banned from movement until the fog clears and visibility is restored; they are also prohibited from entering Abu Dhabi during peak hours and changing weather conditions,” he continued.
Head of Peripheral Regions Traffic Department stated that traffic control was tightened on external and truck roads to reduce the dangers of overtaking and avoid causes that lead to road accidents. He urged motorists to abide by the traffic rules to avoid causing accidents, due to sudden swerves and lane changes.
