Ministry of Interior Hosts Cybercrime Workshop at GITEX

As a part of its participation at GITEX 2013, the Ministry of Interior organized a workshop tackling cybercrimes. The GITEX 2013 which concluded on Thursday was held at Sheikh Saeed Halls at Dubai World Trade Center.

The workshop included a work paper submitted by consultant Mohammed Ahmed Al Hammadi, Chairman of the Sub-Committee of Legislative Regulations and Requirements at the Higher Committee for Child Protection, Ministry of Interior. Al Hammadi reviewed developments in the UAE cyber crimes laws and their role in protecting society. He also deliberated on Law No.3 for 2003 regulating the telecommunications sector; Law No. 2 for 2006 on the prevention of IT crimes; and the Federal Legal Decree No. 5 for 2012 issued as an amendment to Federal Legal Decree No. 2 for 2006 on combating cyber crimes.

Al Hamadi reviewed the major amendments to Law No. 5 of 2012, which cover a wider range of offences than those included in the previous Law No. 2 for 2006. Examples include accessing an IT System without authorization; hacking and phishing; introducing virus programs to an IT System and spam emails. The law also criminalizes credit card and bank account theft and fraud; and also has various offences related to protecting government data and securing financial, trade or economic establishments. It also penalizes defamation through electronic means, child pornography and online exploitation, and masking the IP address.
