Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, December 27th 2011 [ME NewsWire]
RATP Dev, a subsidiary of the RATP Group , launched the first line of the Algiers metro system at the end of 2011.
The 9-km long line makes Algiers the first city in the Maghreb to boast a metro. With the metro in Cairo, it is the only heavy metro system on the entire African continent.
RATP Dev has made a major contribution to the culmination of this large-scale project, which the Algerians have eagerly awaited.
In 2009, RATP Dev set up a local subsidiary, RATP El Djazaïr. The subsidiary has first completed by pre-operations phase and runs and maintains Line 1 for an eight-year term since November 1st. The metro already carried one million passengers during the first month of operation.
The metro’s 14 trains with six air-conditioned carriages will be stopping at ten stations and catering to six municipalities: Bachdjarah, El Magharia, Hussein Dey, El Hamma, Sidi M’Hamed and Algiers Centre.
The entry into service of the Algiers metro system illustrates the two-fold expertise of RATP Dev, which has demonstrated its technical know-how and ability to train operating staff. It has also ensured 500 nearly new jobs in the country.
The French group is bringing this expertise and know-how to develop its business in Gulf Region countries. The company is currently active in the region through its partnership with SAPTCO for the operation of future light rail and metro networks in Saudi Arabia and was nominated "preferred bidder" for the Dubai-based Al Sufouh Light Railway operating contract. It also expects to further develop its links with the authorities in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, where numerous transport projects should emerge in the years ahead.
Its participation in the UITP Congress held in Dubai last April had already provided the company with the opportunity to present its expertise and the capacity to manage major urban projects and adapt to local situations.
Through its RATP El Djazaïr subsidiary, RATP Dev has developed its operating program and procedures along with regulations and maintenance policy.
RATP Group :
As the fifth largest urban transport operator worldwide, the RATP group has a workforce of 56,000 in 12 countries on four continents.
The RATP group exports its expertise worldwide in operating and maintenance activities through its RATP Dev subsidiary. RATP group turnover in 2010 amounted to €4.57 billion.
