Road safety awareness during rainy weather for 1,200 Drivers

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police has started intensive traffic awareness programs focusing on precautionary procedures and necessary safety measures in inclement weather due to climate changes witnessed in the UAE.

Major Khalid Al Fil, Head of the Community-based Initiatives Team from the Department of Public Relations Section at Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, indicated that the directorate started organizing daily lectures to drivers from the Emirates Transport. The activity included organizing 28 traffic awareness lectures,which were delivered by the First Warrant Officer Salem Al Nahdi and Warrant Officer Ahmed Abdo from the Public Relations Section. These lectures benefitted 1,200 drivers from the Emirates Transport and briefed them on safe driving procedures during weather changes.

He also highlighted the need to focus on precautionary procedures through awareness programs in the event of rain and fog. He urged drivers to reduce vehicle speed, follow road signs, and avoid pressing the brake pedal suddenly. He advised them to gradually press the brake pedal instead and use windscreen wipers as well asthe vehicle lightsto enhance road visibility. Moreover, he called for the need to leave a sufficient distance between other vehicles since the efficiency of the brakes decreases on slick roads. 

Furthermore, he urged motorists tonot to use hazard lights and take precautionary measures to ensure their safety while driving under heavy rain or fog. He also advised them to adopt the following procedures in case of fog: reduce the car’s speed gradually and continue driving cautiously while following the speed that befits the surrounding circumstance; use the vehicle’s low-beam lights; never use hazard lights while driving in the fog; and ensure that there is enough distance to stop the vehicle. The distance required to stop a vehicle is greater when the roads are wet.

Major Al Fil also called upon motorists to be careful while driving during inclement weather on both external and internal roads; he also strongly suggested that motorists carry out regular vehicle inspections, especially checking the front lights, front and rear windscreen wipers tires, and breaks.  He reminded motorists to leave a sufficient distance between vehicles; to be patient during traffic congestion;to avoid improper overtaking or lane changing; and to stay alert and ready for any emergency.

Concluding, he advised drivers to get rid of fog inside their vehicles by pressing the rectangular button to remove fog from the windshield or the rear window.
