The Public Ciphering Keys Meeting for E-passports Starts in participation of 39 Countries

Under the patronage of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the 18th Meeting of Public Ciphering Keys for E-passports started today, Wednesday, and will continue for two days at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi.
Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Director General of Central Operations at Abu Dhabi Police inaugurated the meeting that was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Republic of Brazil Eduardo De Mattos Hosannah; and representatives of 39 member countries of International Civil Aviation Organization. Khalid Nasr Al Tai'e, Director of Electronic Auditing and Information Security Directorate attended the event with Captain Hamid Obeid Al Zaabi, Chief of Information Security and Telecommunications Section at the Ministry of Interior.
The meeting, which is organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), started with a speech for Major General Al Raisi. He welcomed the participants and pointed out that the meeting co-occurs with the celebrations of the UAE 42nd National Day.
He added that the UAE joined Public Ciphering Keys for E-passports Organization in 2011 and has issued E-passports in November of the same year. The E-passports were designed according to the highest security standards set by ICAO.
Al Raisi also said that we are proud of the fact that we have finished activating the national Public Ciphering Keys project throughout UAE. Through this project, the UAE uploaded its passports cipher keys to (PKD) and downloaded passport cipher keys of the other countries from (PKD). The downloaded keys will be distributed on airport terminals by Mach, 2014.
He explained that UAE is the first Arab country to join public cipher keys for e-passports, and the third country worldwide in implementing the project after UK and Germany.
He concluded his speech by attributing thanks and appreciation for the participants and specified Roman Vanek from Swiss Confederation, PKD Board Chairman for his attendance of the Meeting. He also thanked Eduardo De Mattos Hosannah, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Republic of Brazil for attending the event as an observer and expressed his hopes that Brazil will join ICAO shortly. He wished everyone success and good accomplishments.
The first work session was held after that. It included a revision of the meeting’s agenda, a discussion about the general benefits for all the member countries of ICAO and the procedures of signing agreements among member countries and the financial budgets related to joining the ICAO, and a demonstration of Public Ciphering Keys for e-passports structure.
The 18th Meeting of Public Ciphering Keys for E-passports will conclude tomorrow, Thursday. UAE will present its experience in this field among other presentations of other member countries’ technical experience.
