The Abu Dhabi Police arrested two persons (a GCC citizen and an Asian) under suspicions of hunting a deer in one of the nature reserves in Ghayathi in the Western Region. The suspects used a hunting rifle and a vehicle without a license plate.

The seven-year-old son of the GCC national that accompanied the two men on their hunting trip was handed over to his family, according to Colonel Ojeil Ali Al Junaibi, Director of the Western Region Police Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ. Colonel Al Junaibi warned people against putting the lives of children at risk and hunting without a permit; he stated that hunting without the appropriate permits is punishable by law.

“On June 11th, a patrol vehicle spotted a pick-up truck at night without license plate numbers during their field tour. It was stopped near the Ghayathi industrial area,” reported Colonel Al Junaibi.

He added that the initial inspection revealed a dead deer in the back of the pick-up truck, along with a weapon and ammunition inside the vehicle. Suspects were order to step out of the vehicle when the patrol members also spotted the son of one of the men. The police officers confiscated the vehicle and the murder weapon.

Colonel Al Junaibi indicated that the Arab national suspect, M.A, 38, confessed that he was involved with the Asian suspect, M. Sh., 25, in hunting and killing a deer with a rifle while driving at night alongside the nature reserve’s fence. The two suspects then cut through fence to enter the reserve and drag the deer to their vehicle after slitting his neck to confirm its death,” he explained.

Concluding, the Director of the Western Region Police stressed that the Abu Dhabi Police will continue its efforts to respond to any attack on nature reserves and will arrest those who illegally hunt rare animals and abuse wildlife.

Furthermore, he emphasized the police’s active role in cooperating with concerned entities to ensure the protection and preservation of wildlife projects implemented by the UAE in general and Abu Dhabi in particular. The protection of wildlife is in line with natural heritage sustainability efforts and supports biological and ecological diversity.
