ExxonMobil Foundation Marks World Malaria Day with Increased Commitment to the Fight against Malaria
ExxonMobil’s total grants top $100 million since year 2000

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The ExxonMobil Foundation today announced grants for 2011 aimed at making further advances to combat malaria and raise awareness of this disease. The new grants will be highlighted at the opening of the “Champions to End Malaria” photo exhibition at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
“Over the past decade, we have seen a 20 percent drop in the number of deaths attributed to malaria,” said Suzanne McCarron, president of the ExxonMobil Foundation. “We are committed to continue doing our part to fight this disease and believe these additional grants will save the lives of even more people in the years to come.”
McCarron announced that ExxonMobil has awarded 24 projects grants totaling $10 million for work in Africa and Asia. Since 2000, ExxonMobil and the ExxonMobil Foundation have contributed more than $100 million to the fight against malaria. This funding has helped with efforts to distribute bed nets, develop anti-malaria medication and provide early treatment and prevention programs, which have helped 40 million people, mostly in Africa.

The “Champions to End Malaria” exhibition, to be held April 25 through May 22, is a joint project of ExxonMobil, the United Nations Foundation, Roll Back Malaria and world renowned photographer Platon to highlight the extraordinary efforts individuals have made against malaria. Platon has captured the images of individuals from all walks of life who have made an extraordinary difference in saving lives from malaria.
The newly awarded grants build on past contributions to the fight against malaria by focusing on delivering life-saving interventions, promoting research and development, and advocating for international policy and support.
