AEG Power Solutions is Awarded a 6 Mw Contract for Hydrogen Electrolysis Process in Hybrid Power Generation Plant

HANNOVER, Germany - Tuesday, April 24th 2012 [ME NewsWire]

HANNOVER MESSE 2012 Hall 12 / Stand D06

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Thyrobox H2 innovative power supply system will equip the electrolysis process of a German hybrid power generation plant (“Power to Gas”). It’s the 4th contract the company wins in 12 months for similar applications. Strategy of diversifying applications of its leading edge power controllers is paying off.
Energy technology and power electronics specialist AEG Power Solutions (AEG PS) has been awarded its 4th order for its innovative power supply system for electrolysis within one year.
This recent order is the biggest one signed by AEG PS for the Thyrobox H2 during the past 12 months. The AEG PS power supply system will be used for the hydrogen electrolyzer with a total capacity of 6 MW, in a hybrid power generation plant under construction in the North of Germany.
Hybrid power plants are capable of storing energy – generated by wind mills or other sources, such as photovoltaic – and re-injecting it into the grid or transforming it into gas on demand. A highly efficient electrolysis process in the power plant converts the energy into hydrogen. AEG Power Solutions’ Thyrobox H2 is powering this crucial part of the process. The water-cooled rectifier benefits of a unique design. It ensures high dynamic response, high precision, efficiency, reliable power delivery to the electrolyzer with maximum power factor at its input.
Thyrobox H2 supports the production of the hydrogen, which is later on transformed into methane gas by the Sabatier process. This gas can be then supplied to the regular gas pipelines, or it can be used in gas power plants.
Energy storage or transformation is the key challenge for renewable energy integration of wind and solar in order to become a reliable source for the general power supply.
“The significant increase of these renewable energies thus creates the need for energy storage or transformation, and hydrogen and/or methane production are now developing faster and faster as clean energy storage solutions“ explains Gladwyn De Vidts, Chief Strategic Officer of AEG Power Solutions. “As a technological leader in power solutions and thanks to our experience in supplying complex high power applications, we’ve been able to create a system adapted to this specific process. It opens a brand new market for us in renewables and is very promising.”
