Abu Dhabi Traffic Police Seizes 2,534 Vehicles for Dangerous Speeds in 8 Months

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, September 29th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police seized 2,534 vehicles for driving at dangerous speeds on the internal and external roads of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi; dangerous speeds are defined as speeds above 200 km/hr. These vehicle seizures took place between January 1 and August 31 of this year according to Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police.

Al Harithi stressed that there would be no laxity in enforcing the traffic law pertaining to driving at dangerous speeds, participating in races, doing risky stunts such as drifting with vehicles or motorcycles. He noted that public roads are not circuits for racings or doing such stunts; rather they are public roads upon which all users are supposed to abide by the traffic laws.

He warned motorists, especially the younger ones, not to commit any traffic law violations, exceed the speed limit, race, or perform stunts. He also highlighted that road monitoring has increased through the civil patrols of the Traffic Investigation Section on various roads, in addition to air patrols, which are operated in cooperation with the Air Wing Section at the Abu Dhabi Police. The air patrols can take footage of violators and the road violations they commit. This is to enable their detention and subject them to the applicable laws and regulations. Violators will be detained and their vehicles and motorcycles will be impounded; furthermore, they will be referred to the relevant authority to take necessary action.

Al Harithi said that exceeding the allowed speed constitutes a grave danger for road users and further noted that it is one of the main causes of traffic accidents. Speeding decreases the amount of time that a motorist can make the correct decision that would protect him/her from the risk of collisions; it poses a threat if there is not a sufficient amount of distance left between vehicles in that the probability of having an accident due to loss of vehicle control in the event where a spontaneous corrective decision is required is higher. Such events include flat tires while driving, which make it more likely to have an accident due to not being able to avoid the errors of others. At higher speeds the impact of such collisions is higher and the damage tends to be greater.
