During
the Ministry of Interior’s council hosted by Mohammed Ahmed Al Bloushi
on Friday in Al Ain, attendees recommended reinforcing institutional and
community efforts to address the misuse of social media. Participants
at the council called for appropriate solutions to avoid misuse and
abuse of social media especially by the youth. They also stressed the
need to introduce stiffer penalties for using mobile phones while
driving, in order to reduce traffic accidents. The Council called for
organizing educational programs to educate students on the optimal use
of modern technologies, along with media campaigns to acquaint parents
with the risks of social media misuse. Mohammed Ahmed Al Mahmoud Al
Bloushi, host of the council, lauded the efforts of the Ministry of
Interior, represented by the Law Respect Culture Bureau, and its leading
role in analyzing and addressing the various negative phenomena in
society, in a bid to achieve the highest levels of security, safety, and
social stability.
For his part, Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Salah
Obeid Al Ghoul, Director of Law Respect Culture Bureau at the Minister
of Interior tackled the awareness councils’ initiatives launched by the
ministry. “These councils aim at strengthening relations with community
members and discuss a variety of social issues of national, service, and
police specificity,” he said.
The council, held under the theme
“The impact of social media on youth”, was moderated by media figure
Mohammed Ghanem Mustafa (of Ras Al Khaimah Radio). It tackled a number
of topics, which called for further action to promote awareness on the
proper use of modern communication technologies and social media.

Obeid Al Zaabi (from the Public Relations Department at the Ministry of
Interior) highlighted the advantages of modern means of communication.
“They increase interaction between members of society and facilitate
access to information in different fields and disciplines of life,” he
said. For his part, Abdullah bin Ramdoun, Family Counselor, indicated
that parents are now learning from their tech-savvy children, due to the
widespread use of advanced technology and media programs in society.
On
the same note, Ahmed Ali Al Bloushi, (Head of the Cooperation Council
Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), underlined the
importance of developing appropriate solutions in order to avoid the
misuse and abuse of modern means of communication. “The negative and
wrongful use of these means yield adverse implications and negative
consequences on young people,” he said. Rashid Al Bloushi (CEO of the
Abu Dhabi Securities Market) called for concerted efforts between
government and private authorities and various community groups to avoid
the risks and impact of social media on our children.
Colonel
Hamad Nasser Al Bloushi, Head of the Peripheral Regions Traffic
Department at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police,
tackled the growing problem of driver distraction that leads to traffic
accidents, caused by people using social media while driving, as they
fail to pay attention to road surprises.
Sultan Mohammed Al
Mahmoud (Executive Director of Strategic Development at the Tourism
Development and Investment Company TDIC) reiterated the need to raise
awareness among parents about the dangerous and negative impacts of
social media misuse. For his part, Colonel Taleb Al Bloushi (from the
Naturalization, Residency and Ports Affairs Department at the Ministry
of Interior), noted that the organizing bodies constantly endeavor to
raise awareness among community members of the risks of social media
misuse. “Different segments of society are now much more aware of these
risks, which contributes to reducing their severity and adverse
effects,” he said.
Towards the end of the Council, Lieutenant
Colonel Dr. Salah Obeid Al Ghoul, Director of Law Respect Culture Bureau
at the Minister of Interior honored the host of the Council, Mohammed
Ahmed Al Mahmoud Al Bloushi and handed him a certificate of appreciation
and a commemorative shield.
