Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Monday, February 24th 2014
HE
Abdul Rahman Al Owais, UAE Minister of Health, has said that the
ministry, in cooperation with official health entities in the UAE, will
organize a number of initiatives aiming to curb chronic diseases,
including diabetes, which is one of the most common diseases in the UAE.
He noted that that these initiatives will be announced in the near
future.
Speaking to reporters following the inauguration of the
4th Emirates Diabetes & Endocrine Congress 2014, which was organized
by Emirates Medical Association (EMA) and attended by 2000 physicians
and specialists from all over the world, Minister Al Owais emphasized
the importance of medical conferences and exhibitions and the role that
they play in delivering international expertise to local doctors through
interaction and direct communication with foreign doctors. He said that
the aim of this is to review the latest developments in the treatment
of diabetes.
For his part, Dr. Abdulrazzaq Ali Al Madani,
President-Emirates Diabetes Society, EDEC Congress President and CEO of
Dubai Hospital, affirmed the importance of this conference for all
countries in the region, especially because several gulf countries are
now listed among the top ten globally in terms of diabetes. He noted
that the UAE is no longer on the top ten list, and the initial
indicators of the study conducted by the EMA, in cooperation with
specialized entities, show a significant decline in disease rates in the
country. He said that the decline was a result of the awareness
campaigns, people’s knowledge of the factors that cause the disease, and
the public’s tendency to practice sports, especially after the
municipalities constructed pathways for walking. He mentioned that this
tendency helps patients control their blood sugar levels and reduce
their weight, which is a main factor that causes the disease.
Dr.
Al Madani continued that recent years have witnessed the emergence of
new medicines for diabetes that lead to good results and control blood
sugar levels. He pointed out that maintaining good blood sugar levels
helps patients avoid other complications that may affect their retinas,
blood vessels, kidneys and hearts. He noted that it is now widely known
that diabetes is a silent disease that has serious implications on other
body organs. He said that the World Health Organization (WHO) noted in
its last report that there are five chronic, non-communicable diseases
that include diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and heart diseases,
which constitute 65% of total causes of death in the UAE.
Dr. Al
Madani commented: “This year’s conference, held in cooperation with the
American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist, is one of the largest
conferences held in the region as the number of participants reached
1800; an increase of 25% when compared to the previous conference. 19
lecturers from the United Stated, Europe and Australia; 31 work papers;
and 3 workshops will all discuss issues including diabetes, endocrine
hormonal disorders, vitamin D deficiency, and men and women’s hormonal
disorders, concentrating on thyroid disorders, polyps, thyroid cancer
and osteoporosis, and their complications for diabetics.
Following
the remarks, HE Abdul Rahman Al Owais inaugurated the exhibition held
in conjunction with the conference, with the participation of all global
companies manufacturing medicines for diabetes that were recently
launched to regulate blood sugar rates. The exhibition will also include
products related to children’s diabetes and the latest developments in
the treatment of this disease.
