Earth Day 2012: With Gardena, Everyone Can Save Water

ULM, Germany - Saturday, April 21st 2012 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Earth – living space for people of all nations. The protection of our blue planet concerns us all. In order to set an example when it comes to the preservation of nature, over 175 countries will be celebrating Earth Day on the 22nd of April. The decisive factor here is that every one of us can make a small contribution towards environmental protection. Gardena shows how valuable drinking water can be saved thanks to the clever use of modern helpers.

Around two thirds of the Earth is covered with water. However, only 0.3 percent of all water reserves are suitable for our use as drinking water. In this conjunction, the distribution and consumption varies greatly from country to country. Whilst the consumption per capita in Germany amounts to 129 litres a day, in the USA, it is 295 litres.* In order to use water prudently, it is important to develop a feeling for water quantities. On the occasion of Earth Day on the 22nd of April, Gardena would like to contribute towards using this valuable resource as consciously as possible. With the new Gardena Water Smart Flow Meter from the tried-and-tested Original Gardena System, controlling water consumption becomes child’s play. The small square box is easily connected to the tap, sprayer or sprinkler with a simple click, and shows how much of the precious resource has already left the water connection. In this manner, flowers, fruit and vegetables receive just the right amount to flourish well.

Using every drop sensibly

In the kitchen garden, water consumption can be optimised even further by using smart irrigation systems: According to information by the Water Foundation, up to 60 percent of water trickles away unused due to ineffective irrigation systems. By contrast, the environmentally conscious gardener counts on water-saving irrigation with the Gardena Micro-Drip System. Thanks to this effective method, every drop reaches the roots of the plant – which is exactly where it is needed. In particularly hot and dry regions, the best bet is the Gardena Drip Irrigation Line which can be installed underground. In this manner, water loss via evaporation is avoided. Irrigation becomes even more practical if a Water Computer with a Soil Moisture Sensor is attached to the automatic irrigation system. Thus, you can rest assured that watering takes place only when the plants really need it.
