Diabetes and Endocrine Congress Opens in Dubai Today

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of the Dubai Health Authority

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, February 4th 2016 [ME NewsWire]

The 6th Emirates Diabetes & Endocrine Congress (EDEC) opens today at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre, United Arab Emirates. EDEC 2016 is an international event which will run for three days for healthcare professionals to discuss the ever increasing challenges and recent advances in the management of diabetes.

EDEC is organized by Emirates Diabetes Society (EDS) who aims to educate the healthcare community and enable professionals in providing patient care, counselling and guidance about diabetes and also develops local  guidelines for the management with a multidisciplinary approach.

EDS for the last five years is committed to developing a regional platform to unite the healthcare professionals and is focused on developing the skills and knowledge of the Middle East healthcare communities. With the support of Endocrine Society from USA, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, Dubai Health Authority and other regional and international healthcare organizations, EDEC 2016 will host over 3,000 endocrinologists, Diabetologists, internist, paediatricians, cardiologists, nephrologists, gynaecologists, pharmacists, nurses and academics from the region and beyond.

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Diabetes claimed the lives of more than 4 million people globally. In addition to this, 387 million are living with type 2 diabetes and are on the rise worldwide. This figure is expected to hit 592 million by 2035. In IDF’s worldwide diabetes league table, UAE is ranked 16th, with 19% of the UAE population living with the disorder.

These statistics indicate that the region has high risk factors for diabetes. Some of the contributing factors are sedentary lifestyle and eating habits which cause an increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Attributing risk factors for diabetic patients are mainly neuropathy, nephropathy and retinopathy including cardiovascular disease which is estimated to be up to six times higher than a non-diabetic person.

This year, EDEC will have more than 20 international stellar faculties with 13 different sessions. Amongst which the new data from Dubai being presented by EDS is something to look forward to as well as state-of-art lectures on young adults’ diabetes, technology advances, obesity, paediatric endocrinology, cardiovascular diseases and genetics will also be discussed among others. The EDEC 2016 programme has been approved with 18 CME hours by the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) College of Medicine and Health Sciences, 13.5 CME hours by Ministry of Health and 16 CME hours by Dubai Health Authority.
