Inter-Arab Nuclear Detection and Response “Falcon” Exercise Concludes in Abu Dhabi


Strengthened the Fightagainst Radiological and Nuclear Risks

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, February 29th 2016 [ME NewsWire]

The Inter-Arab Nuclear Detection and Response Exercise held under the title “The Falcon Exercise” recently concluded its activities in the capital of Abu Dhabi. The three-day exercise was organized by the Regional Secretariat of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Centers of Excellence (CoE) Risk Mitigation and the Abu Dhabi Police, in cooperation with the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), and took place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC).

In his address to the attendees at the conclusion of the exercise, Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director General of Central Operations at Abu Dhabi Police and acting Director of the Secretariat in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, stressed the keenness of the United Arab Emirates’ higher leadership to strengthen cooperation, coordination and exchange of experiences in the field of countering chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear hazards.

Additionally, Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi hoped that the exercise has achieved the desiredgoals, contributed to an increasedawareness of the regional risks and threats, and identified the best global practices for the initial response to nuclear accidents. “The exercise also aimed to enhance cooperation and coordination between the national teams of Arab countries, and encourage the exchange of experiences and knowledge in the field of radiological and nuclear incidents,” he added.

Furthermore, Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi expressed his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the participants of the joint Arab exercise, the representatives of the EU and the UNICRI, the international organizations, and the delegations from the countries participating in the exercise. Healso thanked all the organizers for the great and considerable efforts they have made in preparing for this exercise, which contributed to its success. The closing ceremony concluded by honoring all participants.

It is worth mentioning that the Inter-Arab Nuclear Detection and Response “Falcon” Exercisetook place with the participation of a number of officials and regional and international specialists. It featured workshops, presentations and open discussions related to nuclear and radiological threats and ways to prevent them. Participants also defined the roles required from the concerned entities, the means of forming national teams, and a nuclear simulation drill.
