Residency and Ports: Educational Lecture on Heart Diseases

Major General KhalifaHareb Al Khaili, Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Naturalization, Residency and Port Affairs, attended an educational lecture presented by Dr. Ahmed Fathi Maaruf from the Health Education Section at the Medical Services Department. The lecture, which explored heart disease causes and prevention against high blood pressure and high saturated fats, was organized by the Media and Public Relations Section, the General Directorate for Resources and Support Services, in cooperation with the Health Education Section at Medical Services Department. , .

Also attending the lecture, which was held at the Spirit of the Union Hall, at the Assistant Undersecretary for Naturalization, Residency and Port Affairs’ Office were heads of departments and chiefs of sections, along with a number of officers, non-commissioned officers, constables, and female staff members from the Naturalization, Residency and Port Affairs Department.

It is noteworthy that this lecture comes in line with the Media and Public Relations Section’s agenda for 2013, aimed at spreading health education as well as raising awareness among staff members and providing them with the necessary skills and information to avoid all forms of diseases, heart diseases in particular.

Dr. Ahmed Fathi kicked off the lecture by giving attendees an overview on the heart’s functioning and structure. He also highlighted the range of diseases that affect the heart, the symptoms and causes as well as the various types, namely; heart failure; cardiac hypertrophy (Cardiomegaly) and coronary artery disease.

He also tackled the appropriate methods to prevent heart diseases such as: quitting smoking; maintaining normal levels of blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes; exercising regularly; healthy eating; maintaining a healthy weight; and reducing and managing stress.

Dr Fathi also cited means of atherosclerosis prevention such as cholesterol screening lab tests; stressing the need to lead a healthy lifestyle to lower cholesterol and to eat fresh fruits and vegetables to avoid heart diseases.

At the conclusion of the lecture, Acting Director General of Resources and Support Services expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Medical Services Department for its fruitful cooperation with all the Ministry of Interior sections. He also praised its tireless efforts to educate staff members of the Ministry of Interior in general and the Naturalization, Residency and Port Affairs sector in particular.
