ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, February 27th 2014
The
Medical Services Section at Al Ain Police Directorate organized an
awareness event about colon cancer for their affiliated supporters, with
the aim of improving their health education.
Dr. Angham Ali Aman, Health Education Unit officer, revealed causes of the disease and means of prevention.
She
explained that early diagnosis is possible if patients get
colonoscopies once every 10 years, and blood tests once every 2 years.
This is based on the medical recommendations for people who range
between the ages of 40- 75.
As per Abu Dhabi Health Authority's
statistics for 2001-2012, , colon cancer is the second most prevalent
disease, and accounts for 8% of all cancer cases and is second to breast
cancer.
Dr. Angham Ali Aman emphasized the importance of early
diagnosis to help with fast recovery, noting that a change in life style
habits, the maintenance of target weight and shape, along with health
education, are all factors that help decrease the risk of cancer. The
change in lifestyle could also help decrease the risk of colon cancer by
60 to 80%.
