The application window for the 3rd Annual Patient Safety Innovation Awards is April 3, 2017 to October 2, 2017. Finalists will be announced in November 2017 and winners will be announced at the 6th Annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit in February 2018. The proposed innovation can be a new product, process or the novel use of an existing technology or process. Entries will be judged by members of the PSMF’s Board of Directors. The first-prize winner receives $50,000, followed by $25,000 for second prize and $10,000 for third prize.

Joe Kiani, Founder of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, said, “Through the Patient Safety Innovation Awards, we have been able to provide added impetus to bring forward easily implemented ideas that can make a substantial impact TODAY in reducing preventable hospital deaths. Each and every safety innovation, no matter its size or scope, brings us one step closer to our goal of ZERO deaths by 2020.”

“We are so honored to win this award. We started working on our innovation when our father died in 1994, and we’ve been carrying it forward with a solution we think will change the world. We appreciate the light this award shines on our innovation and hope to get our first hospital pilot program this year,” said 2016 Patient Safety Innovation Awards first-prize winners Matt and Dulie Reavill of ReavillMED.

The 2015 Patient Safety Innovation Awards first-prize winner, Philippa Makobore of the Uganda Industrial Research Institute said, “Our innovation was designed to improve the safety of intravenous fluid delivery, especially for small children. The first thing we did when we left the Summit was to engage industrial engineers from Design Without Borders to design appropriate casings. We also started to automate the device through software and hardware development which comprised of algorithm design and engaged a consultant systems engineer to streamline the process and carry out tests that are in line with stringent medical device standards.”

Addressing future Patient Safety Innovation Awards recipients, Ms. Makobore stated, “This award provides a major breakthrough for your innovation and is also a major stepping stone for the development of your product so that you can reach the impact that it is intended for and ultimately reduce preventable deaths within the hospital in line with the Patient Safety Movement’s mission to reach zero preventable deaths by 2020.”

About the Patient Safety Movement Foundation

More than 200,000 people die every year in U.S. hospitals and 3 million worldwide in ways that could have been prevented. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation was established through the support of the Masimo Foundation for Ethics, Innovation, and Competition in Healthcare to reduce that number of preventable deaths to 0 by 2020 (0X2020). Improving patient safety will require a collaborative effort from all stakeholders, including patients, healthcare providers, medical technology companies, government, employers, and private payers. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation works with all stakeholders to address the problems with actionable solutions for patient safety. The Foundation also convenes the World Patient Safety, Science and Technology Summit. The Summit brings together some of the world’s best minds for thought-provoking discussions and new ideas to challenge the status quo. By presenting specific, high-impact solutions to meet patient safety challenges, called Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, encouraging medical technology companies to share the data their products are purchased for, and asking hospitals to make commitments to implement Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, the Patient Safety Movement Foundation is working toward zero preventable deaths by 2020.
