Maximizing Supply Chain Flexibility Is Top Requirement for Global Supply Chain Executives, According to New Survey from PRTM

Global Supply Chain Leaders Who Implemented Five “Operational Flexibility” Levers Increased Revenues 12 to 15 Percent and Reduced Supply Chain Costs 8 to 10 Percent

WALTHAM, Mass. - Wednesday, June 29th 2011 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- High volatility, massive swings in customer demand, and challenges in ensuring sufficient supply are the current reality for global supply chain executives—making supply chain flexibility the new imperative for growing company revenues while keeping supply chain costs under control. The findings are part of a new survey—2011 Global Supply Chain Trends—from global management consulting firm PRTM. Based on interviews with senior executives from 150 companies across industries, this 2011 supplement to PRTM’s 2010–2012 Global Supply Chain Trendsreport identifies five levers that increase operational flexibility, drive revenues and cut costs.

Companies that have implemented the five supply chain flexibility levers have, on average, achieved a 12 to 15 percent revenue increase and reduced supply chain costs by 8 to 10 percent, according to PRTM. However, PRTM found that operational flexibility requires significant investment as well as a top-down commitment from supply chain executives. In the survey, supply chain leaders are defined as the top 20 percent of supply chain performers, while laggards are the bottom 20 percent. Companies were evaluated according to various quantitative criteria and PRTM’s Supply Chain Maturity Matrix, which is based on the Supply-Chain Operations Reference-model® (SCOR®).

“Volatility is the new norm for supply chain operations, and continuing economic uncertainty is affecting demand by driving shorter capital investment cycles and tighter inventories,” said Dr. Reinhard Geissbauer, director at PRTM and leader of the study. He continued, “At the same time, political unrest, growing competition for resources, and a supply base not yet fully recovered from the financial crisis is generating supply shortages. And that outlook does not even include singular events such as Fukushima, Icelandic volcanoes, and other natural events.”

As part of the study, PRTM found five “operational flexibility” levers that boost revenues and reduce supply chain costs:

Supply Assurance/Proactive Capacity Management:More than 70 percent of respondents said that supply assurance management—ensuring that the necessary resources to satisfy customer orders are available—is the most important lever to boost operational flexibility. Yet nearly half of respondents have not fully implemented partnerships with key suppliers and one-third said they haven’t focused on it at all.

Collaborative End-to-End Demand and Supply Planning:Supply chain leaders have established end-to-end, real-time supply and demand planningwith both key customers and suppliers. Collaborative forecasting, executive sales and operations planning and real-time demand planning are being implemented, on average, by more than 50 percent of the companies surveyed. However, more than 20 percent said their companies have not even started to execute these key end-to-end planning initiatives.

Tighter Integration/Partner Supply Chain Architectures:All players in the global supply network must work together to execute agreed upon performance standards. In the last two years, more than 70 percent of respondents began establishing flexible production facilities, but more than one-third reported issues with key supplier architectures and nearly the same percentage found major gaps in their customers' architecture.

Tearing Down the Wall:Eliminating the divide between supply chain management and product development/engineeringis essential for accelerating ramp-up and ramp-down of products into diverse customer markets. Half of those surveyed understand this and consequently have invested in higher development responsiveness. A “win-win” collaborative set-up includes joint consideration of product development, sales and supply chain requirements.

Superior Collaboration and Flexibility:In today’s volatile environment, collaboration and flexibility are critical for success. Only 10 percent of respondents reported that they have developed these capabilities to the point where they can adapt their business models faster than the competition.

BIOTRONIK Announces Completion of Enrollment in the 4EVER Clinical Study Including Long Lesions in Peripheral Vascular Disease

Secondary study focus is the potential for optimized results with BIOTRONIK’s novel 4F Solutions portfolio

BUELACH, Switzerland - Wednesday, June 29th 2011 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BIOTRONIKannounced today that the full cohort of 120 patients has been successfully enrolled into the physician-initiated 4EVER clinical study. Follow up is scheduled at 1, 6 and 12 months, with immediate and 6 month results potentially available in January 2012.

4EVER is a prospective, non-randomized, multicenter, clinical investigation evaluating the safety and efficacy of the Astron Pulsarand Pulsar-18stents in the SFA. The primary endpoint is primary patency at 12 months. Two of the secondary endpoints are procedural success and wound complication rate.

“The 4EVER study aims to demonstrate the efficacy of Astron Pulsar and Pulsar-18 stents implanted in SFA lesions up to 200mm in length, and secondarily, the technical feasibility and potential safety benefits of lower limb intervention using only 4F devices,” commented Dr. Marc Bosiers, Vascular Surgeon, Dendermonde, Belgium, principal investigator of 4EVER. He continued, “Several studies have demonstrated lower wound complication rates of 4F vs. 6F vascular access in coronary applications, and it is anticipated that 4EVER will confirm these findings in the peripheral application.”

Alain Aimonetti, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Vascular Intervention at BIOTRONIK, added, “Increasing numbers of endovascular practitioners are realizing the benefits of 4F intervention—not just in terms of lower device crossing profile and reduced wound complications, but also the potential cost savings related to faster ambulation and reduced usage of vascular closure devices.”

In recent years, BIOTRONIK has launched the industry’s broadest portfolio of low-profile, 4F introducer-sheath-compatible devices aimed at putting the right tools in the hands of peripheral interventionalists. This has positioned BIOTRONIK at the forefront of vascular device innovation—with highlights including the world’s first fully 4F compatible,

200mm self-expanding stent, Pulsar-18.

BIOTRONIK will continue to drive innovative, minimally invasive solutions for physicians treating lower limb arterial disease. During 2011, further enhancements to the PTA portfolio will be launched, including longer balloon lengths in the successful Passeo-18PTA range and Passeo-14, a dedicated 0.014"-based infrapopliteal PTA balloon. In addition, the optimized stent design of Pulsar-18 will be released in 20–80mm lengths, bringing higher radial force and even greater flexibility compared to previous generation devices.

Citi Prime Finance Survey Shows Rapid Shift to Direct Investing in Hedge Funds by Pension and Sovereign Wealth Funds

NEW YORK - Tuesday, June 28th 2011 [ME NewsWire]

Hedge Funds Managing $1 Billion to $5 Billion Experience Largest Growth

$820 Billion in Direct Money from Pensions and Sovereign Wealth Funds Now Invested in Hedge Funds

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Institutional fund managers have undertaken a dramatic shift to direct hedge fund investing following the global financial crisis, according to a new survey from Citi Prime Finance. The survey, “Global Pensions and Sovereign Wealth Funds Investment in Hedge Funds: The Growth and Impact of Direct Investing”, isbased on in-depth qualitative interviews with nearly 60 major investors representing $1.65 trillion in assets under management as well as hedge fund managers representing $186 billion in assets under management, reveals that pensions and sovereign wealth funds have not only been increasing their hedge fund investment programs but are taking a more active and “direct” approach to allocating these investments, as opposed to using traditional fund of funds. This trend has significant implications for hedge fund managers seeking to attract this capital.

“While the conventional wisdom is that directly allocated capital is going only to the largest hedge fund managers, we actually found that smaller hedge funds managing between $1 billion and $5 billion experienced the largest net growth in 2010,” said Sandy Kaul, US Head of Business Advisory Services.

“Fund managers in this range occupy a ‘sweet spot’ for investment allocators, with interest extending as low as $500 million in developed markets and $250 million in emerging markets. Above $5 billion we see a bifurcation in the industry among hedge fund managers that are limiting new investment and those that are developing into larger asset management organizations,” said Ms. Kaul.

Citi’s research indicates that the global pension and sovereign wealth fund allocation to the hedge fund asset class stands today at approximately three percent of the global pension and sovereign wealth fund asset pool of $31 trillion, or $820 billion. The continued growth from these sectors is discussed in depth in the survey and presents both opportunities and challenges to hedge fund managers seeking to attract these investments, which are often described as “sticky money” due to their longer-term investment horizon.

“Size is not the only factor in attracting Institutional capital, and other aspects of maturity and stability are equally important in reaching an institutional threshold to make investors attracted to these managers”, said Chris Greer, Global Head of Capital Introductions.

Among other key survey findings:

  • Direct allocator hedge fund portfolios are typically small with only 20-50 managers. Interviewees usually made only 1-4 allocations per year, writing few, but large tickets ranging from $25 to $100 million USD.
  • Partnership is key;Emphasis was placed on the “partnership” forged between the direct allocator and their selected managers and on the longer-term investment focus of their portfolios.
  • Pension and Sovereign Wealth Fund direct allocators have not yet settled on a standard model or approach as most still look to outsourced CIOs, consultants or fund of fund advisors to support their direct allocating efforts.

“Educating hedge funds on what it takes to attract and maintain these long term investments is becoming a key role for Prime Brokers who understand both sides of this investor-hedge fund manager dynamic” Mr. Greer said.

Download Close
