Mohammed bin Zayed Awards 200 Houbaras to Top Achievers at Sixth Qatar International Falcons and Hunting Festival

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, January 31st 2015 [ME NewsWire]

General HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces awarded 200 Houbara Bustards from the National Avian Research Center to the top three winners at the Sixth Qatar International Falcons and Hunting Festival 2015. The first place winner received a total of 100 Houbaras, while the second and third place winners obtained 60 and 40 Houbaras respectively. This generous gift aims at honoring the winners and reflects His Highness’s unwavering efforts to preserve this traditional cultural heritage in the Gulf States and to promote breeding and conservation of this endangered bird.

Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, presented the generous gift to the winners on behalf of HH the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi on Saturday evening at the closing ceremony of the festival, which was held at the Cultural Village of Katara in the sisterly State of Qatar. During the closing ceremony, winners were crowned and members of the judging panel were honored.

In his speech on the occasion, HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior said: “This generous gesture granted by General HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, embodies the unstinting commitment and permanent support of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to the protection of the environment and heritage. It also reflects the keenness of the UAE to promote all practices related to the Gulf identity and culture and to encourage traditional sports enthusiasts to pursue their efforts to preserve this heritage in all of its forms.”

Adding further, His Highness said: “Using the Houbara as a valuable gift to honor winners of the various local and regional heritage activities, in addition to encouraging the youth of the Gulf to preserve this precious bird is an important part of the cultural, humanitarian and national strategy embraced by the United Arab Emirates. It is also based on the insightful vision and the very first environmental initiatives adopted by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, May God rest his soul, and pursued by His Highness, president of the UAE.”

Ministry of Interior Participates in the World Congress on Juvenile Justice in Switzerland

Major Dr. Mohammed Al Ali amidst the speakers at the World Congress
Showcasing its Efforts in Preventing Juvenile Delinquency

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, January 31st 2015 [ME NewsWire]

A Ministry of Interior delegation took part in the World Congress on Juvenile Justice, which was held at the International Conference Center in Geneva - CICG (Switzerland). The week-long congress was attended representatives of over 90 countries and more than 110 of NGOs from around the world to discuss best practices with respect children rights and juvenile justice. The congress also aims at promoting collaboration among countries and civil society actors in a bid to raise public awareness and implement the existing international standards in this field.

Brigadier Ahmed Mohammed Nehkairah, Head of Human Rights Department, Ministry of Interior, Chairman of the Juvenile Care Center's Steering Committee, reiterated the keenness of the ministry to participate in such international events; especially the ones that showcase international efforts designed to provide the best projects and services in the field of juvenile care and rehabilitation. He pointed that such participations contribute significantly to exchanging knowledge and expertise and reviewing the best leading international practices, initiatives and projects.

For his part, Major Dr. Mohammed Khalifa Al Ali, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Centre (head of the delegation), said that participation at the congress was an ideal opportunity for the ministry’s delegation to showcase its experiences and exchange opinions, knowledge, and expertise with relevant bodies from around the world; given that this is the first time that government representatives and civil society actors come together to discuss the future of juvenile justice.

During the week-long congress, the MoI’s delegation made two different presentations. The first presentation gave a detailed overview of the efficiency of juvenile delinquency prevention programs, as well as the innovation and creativity in designing and presenting age-appropriate programs. The presentation also tackled the skills and characteristics required in care givers in order for such programs to be effective and successful.

In the second presentation, the UAE delegation explained the role and duties of the Juvenile Care Center in Abu Dhabi, as well as the programs and services it provides in the field of juvenile care. Furthermore, the presentation showcased a comprehensive study about the juvenile delinquency risk factors (the juvenile being a risk to himself and to others – and the risk of others being a risk to juveniles), including an analysis of the factors contributing to juvenile delinquency, and the proper ways to treat and rehabilitate juveniles.

The presentation also showcased examples of the programs that are presently being implemented, such as the post-release care program, which contributes to engaging social organizations in reintegrating juveniles into society. Another example was the family forums program, which involves families of juveniles in the proper post-care efforts, because they are an essential part of juveniles’ treatment and rehabilitation.

The presentations were highly acclaimed by the participants of various categories and scientific disciplines taking part at the congress, who expressed their wish to strengthen cooperation with the UAE, and learn about the latest developments made in the field of juvenile care, through a series of side meetings with the UAE delegation during the congress.

The UAE delegation included First Lieutenant Ahmed Al Bloushi, In-charge of Strategy and Development Unit; Social Care Specialist Ruqiya Abdo Sahyef; and Specialist Marwa Al Shehhi from the Juvenile Care Center at Abu Dhabi Police.

ADP Warn against Bank Account Fraud via Internet

Claiming suspicious money transfers

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, January 31st 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The Abu Dhabi Police warned against scam bank reports received by email, claiming suspicious money transfers to users’ bank accounts, and the need to refer to the nearest police station.

According to the police, such scams are designed to steal victims’ savings, should they respond to those international gangs operating from abroad. Some of these reports contain malware or phishing scams to trick people in order to get information like their bank account numbers, and passwords, which they will then use to steal their money.

Colonel Dr. Rashid Borshid, Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), warned against the increasing number of cyber crimes, because cyber criminals can commit crime from anywhere in the world, especially online fraud and internet scams.

Elaborating on the details of the instance, Colonel Dr. Borshid said: “The Criminal Investigation Department had recently received complaints from people who were led to believe that they are wanted for questioning in connection with suspicious money transfers to their bank accounts. They claimed that they received a bank report including the name and address of a local bank in the letterhead, asking them to refer to the nearest police station.”

Colonel Dr. Borshid said that preliminary investigations have shown that the e-mails sent to victims are phony and from an unknown source; they are not sent by a local entity but from an overseas address, and include words and phrases in English such as “investigation” and “police”.

Furthermore, Colonel Dr. Borshid warned the public against falling prey to such frauds and responding to any kind of threats that are aimed at making financial profit. “Such email scams are designed to undermine the security and safety of Internet users, and are a blatant attempt at extortion and offensive annoying actions,” he continued.

Adding further, Head of the ADP Criminal Investigation Department (CID) called upon members of the public to be cautious and avoid responding to such misleading e-mails; so as to avoid falling prey to international gangs, which seek to steal victims’ savings and destroy their social life.

He also emphasized that awareness is the first line of defense against these negative scourges and phenomena and stressed the need to check the origin of the received messages, and to quickly notify the relevant police authorities to allow them to track culprits promptly. He noted that enhancing awareness against such frauds contributes to better prevention and to maintaining the national gains and human resources against their risks. In conclusion, he highlighted the need to be wary of scam emails and to avoid downloading files or opening attachments in emails from unknown senders to avoid falling prey to cyber fraud and extortion.

It is worth mentioning that the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of His Highness Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, had organized a  community-based campaign to combat phone scams and online fraud. The campaign was supported by a number of government institutions and received great response from the public. It was also aimed at acquainting community members with the risks and negative aspects of modern technology.
